St. Philip's is the Catholic Day Preparatory school which, since 1934, has served Central London. In a family atmosphere of small classes, boys between the ages of seven and thirteen are prepared for Common Entrance and scholarship exams for all public schools. The curriculum incorporates English, Mathematics, Science, Latin, French, History, Geography, Art, Music and, of course, Religious Knowledge, while lessons in Ancient Greek and a wide variety of musical instruments may be arranged as extras. The school incorporates a lending library, a purpose-built art room and Science laboratory, and a large garden. Modern teaching aids such as television, videos, tapes and computers are used to complement the syllabus, while outings also take place in conjunction with school work.
Competitive sport against other schools has always been a strong feature of life at St. Philip's. Two afternoons per week, all boys play football, rugby, cricket, cross-country and athletics in due season, while swimming takes place once per week, throughout the year.
Outside school hours, members of staff and other volunteers organize such pursuits as tap dancing, judo, fencing, drama, chess, computers and art. Other established activities include a school choir and orchestra. A school drama production, involving pupils, staff and parents, takes place annually and there is also a School concert each year.
St. Philip's being ideally situated, visits to museums, theatres, art galleries, concerts and other places of interest take place on a regular basis. Entry to St. Philip's is by examination and interview, though a cross-section of abilities is catered for. Non-Catholics are welcomed if places are available, and comprise about one third of the school.
